Realtor hockey tournament raises money for Children’s Miracle Network

Calgary’s RE/MAX Real Estate (Central) has been a strong supporter over the years of the Children’s Miracle Network.

And the brokerage has been instrumental in some unique ways to raise money for such a worthy cause.

One traditional initiative that has been around for close to 30 years is the annual RE/MAX Hockey Tournament which realtor Ken Eddy has helped organize for close to three decades.

Recently, the tournament, held at Winsport | Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, raised $11,839  for the Children’s Miracle Network. Eddy said the hockey tournament has raised more than $80,000 over the years.

“I remember the day in the late 90s when I was walking past our co-owner at the time Paul Mair’s office at RE/MAX Central.  Paul said, ‘hey Ken, a Mark Dawson from Edmonton called and asked if we could bring a hockey team up as they wanted to have a RE/MAX hockey tournament in Edmonton,” recalled Eddy of how the concept began.

“I said ‘yes I can.’ We went up to Edmonton and played that year and the next year. Real estate agents, especially RE/MAX agents, are pretty competitive. It got out of hand so we thought we should do it in a draft format. So, the third year we held the draft format in Calgary and haven’t stopped since.”

“It has evolved through the years with truly diverse calibre of players. We’ll have some guys that are ex pros. A lot of guys have played junior at different levels but most of the guys are just adults playing beer league hockey.”

“It is a real blast and because of the draft format you do not know who is going to win. In a draft format, six captains draft players for the six teams, then pick out of the hat which team is theirs. This makes it extremely fair.

“I was one of the captains for 25 years but three years ago I elected to turn it over to six younger guys in hopes of attracting younger players to play in the tournament.”

Eddy said the tournament moves around to different cities in Western Canada and averages about 70 players. The majority of players are Western Canada RE/MAX real estate agents, but there are also some mortgage brokers and friends. This year they had a couple of players from Ontario (Ottawa and North Bay).

Draft night this year was on a Monday evening, with each team playing two games on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

Every year there is a theme for the tournament. This year Eddy kept it a secret as he ordered specially designed European jerseys – Russian, Finnish, Swedish, Polish, Czech, and German. In the end, it was Team Russia that won.

The jerseys were auctioned off to raise money for CMN.

“We want to thank our corporate sponsors: Bill LeClair and Ron Thibeault from Calgary Law, and Taimur Akbar from Diamond and Diamond Real Estate Lawyers,” said Eddy.

“And very special thanks to Bill Macklem from Macklem Mortgages for his continued generous support.”

Since January 2000, Eddy has also organized the RE/MAX Canada hockey team that has traveled to places such as the Czech Republic, Hungary, Sweden, Poland, Slovakia, Austria, Latvia, Russia, Germany, Japan, England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Estonia, Denmark, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Switzerland, Ukraine, France, and Finland – all for the love of hockey.
