Calgary realtor’s success based on mindset, consistency

When hockey legend Borje Salming passed away recently, Calgary realtor David Pellettier reflected on the reasons why his boyhood idol was so successful.

“I grew up in Toronto. A big Leafs fan as a kid. Borje Salming was my favourite Leaf ever. To see him pass away was an opportunity to reflect on who he was as a player and as a person. To me Borje Salming was about commitment, discipline and perseverance,” said Pellettier.

“I think those three things are very real in terms of my success in real estate as well.”

Pellettier, a realtor with RE/MAX Real Estate (Central) in Calgary, recently joined an exclusive club in the RE/MAX family being honoured with the Circle of Legends Award in record time. Over the years during his career, Pellettier has been the recipient of numerous awards as one of the real estate brand’s top producers.

Pellettier was the number one realtor in the Central office in his fourth year in the business and he’s held that position for each of the last eight years. He’s been a Top 25 RE/MAX realtor in Western Canada for each of the last eight years as well.

“My success traces to mindset and consistency,” he said.

Pellettier was licenced as a realtor in 2011 and joined the Central team near the beginning of his career. Prior to that, he spent 25 years in the retail trade from the vendor’s side with a long list of manufacturers, managing the relationship between vendor and retailer, regionally, nationally and internationally with a long list of consumer brands.

During that time, he developed a strong background in sales and marketing. But the last 10 years of his career in the industry, he saw plenty of consolidation and job losses. Pellettier himself lost his job twice through consolidations because he refused to move back to Ontario.

“That was getting tiring and I was spending my life trying to justify my existence and trying to carve out something that might be interesting, with diminishing opportunities,” he said.

When he left the consumer goods industry, he took a job with a heating and air conditioning installation company as VP of Sales and Marketing for Alberta. It didn’t work out but through that he learned he had really strong sales skills and ability to connect with people across the kitchen table on a business to consumer level.

“I had an interest in real estate. I was one of those guys that was just kind of on MLS all the time and watching what was going on in the neighbourhood. I think I have an appreciation for design and architecture to some extent. I like the business side of it, the analytic side of it, what was happening in a particular community. I was watching all that through MLS,” explained Pellettier.

“In consumer goods there’s two cardinal rules. One is you don’t mess with the brand and you don’t mess with the consumer . . . When I went into real estate I thought those two principles have a place in real estate.”

Recently, Pellettier received the prestigious Circle of Legends Award from Pat Hare, Central’s broker

“Congratulations! Your career has reached an elite new height, far beyond the grasp of most real estate professionals. Your production, drive, passion, preparation and work ethic have distinguished you as an extraordinary professional of the highest caliber. Welcome to RE/MAX’s most exclusive production club – The Circle of Legends,” read a RE/MAX citation to Pellettier.

He said he is honoured to receive such an award which just 168 RE/MAX realtors received last year – and there are more than 100,000 RE/MAX realtors around the world.

Here are some interesting facts to give a sense of what Pellettier achieved in his career so far. There are 6,842 RE/MAX active agents in Western Canada and 142 of these agents have achieved a Circle of Legends Award.

Just eight of these 142 recipients received their award in 10-11 years.

“Success is measured in so many ways. In addition to achieving this special award in record time, David has shown that he is truly an extraordinary individual in many other ways. Congratulations David !! From everyone at RE/MAX Real Estate (Central), we are proud that you are part of our team,” said Nick Profeta, Office Manager and CHO (Chief Happiness Officer) at RE/MAX Real Estate (Central).
